Identify the level before naming the election.
A state parliament decides on state laws and scrutinises its state government. Voting on its composition is therefore an election at state level.
In everyday life, election notices use different names. The exam uses “Landtagswahl” as the appropriate answer to its general description of electing a state parliament.

The other three answers
The incorrect answers name other levels of political representation.
Municipal election.
Municipal elections choose local representatives or local officeholders under the relevant electoral law. This is not the general term for electing a state parliament.
European election.
European elections choose members of the European Parliament.
Federal election.
The federal election determines the membership of Germany’s parliament at federal level.
The three city-states use distinct names.
Berlin’s state parliament is the Abgeordnetenhaus; Hamburg and Bremen use Bürgerschaft. Their elections use those corresponding names. They remain elections at state level.
Election dates, ballots and detailed rules are not identical across states. The correct exam answer is not a universal voting guide for every state election.
