Understand the process

Understand what you are signing.

The citizenship test, conversations during the procedure and the certificate handover serve different purposes. One appointment does not necessarily include all three.

The test demonstrates knowledge.

The citizenship test is a separate multiple-choice examination. Conversations during the naturalisation procedure have a different role.

Understand the declarations.

For naturalisation by entitlement, section 10 includes commitments to the democratic constitutional order and Germany’s particular historical responsibility. Understand their meaning and make truthful declarations.

Official source ↗

The certificate completes it.

Naturalisation takes effect when the certificate is handed over. Section 16 sets out the solemn declaration made beforehand. Your authority’s invitation explains the local arrangements.

My appointment preparation

A personal preparation aid. Your authority provides the actual document requirements.

  • Read the invitation: where, when and what is the appointment for?
  • Gather the documents requested. Check which originals, copies or translations are required.
  • Read the forms and declarations beforehand. Note unfamiliar terms and your own questions.
  • Be ready to explain your own current circumstances. Be open about changes and uncertainty.
  • Plan your journey and allow enough time. Arrange any support needs with the authority beforehand.

Your invitation takes priority over a general checklist.
