Identify the location before reading the number.
Start with the whole outline of Germany. North is at the top and east on the right. The required area is on the north-eastern edge and touches the coast. This distinguishes it from an area marked farther inland.
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern shares a border with Poland and lies on the Baltic Sea. Its double name does not mean you must select two separate federal states: under Article 1 of its constitution, Mecklenburg and Vorpommern form one state.

The other three answers
The other arrows point to different areas of the map.
1
Number 1 points to the northern peninsula farther left. The required area is east of it along the north-eastern coast.
2
Number 2 points to an inland area south-west of the required coastal region. It has no Baltic coastline in this map.
4
Number 4 points to the large eastern inland area below the required coastal region. The number is outside the area, so the arrow’s endpoint is what matters.
A test number is not a permanent state identifier.
The number 3 belongs only to this particular catalogue image. Also remember north-east and Baltic Sea. Colours, labels and numbers can change on another illustration, while the geographical location stays the same.
The simplified Germany map helps identify federal states. It does not replace a detailed map for travel planning or boundary questions. The AI companion pictures illustrate learning about orientation; the unchanged test image appears in the knowledge check.
