Neighbours help more than an isolated outline.
First orient yourself using Germany’s overall outline. Thüringen is inland, away from the coast. Its neighbours are Niedersachsen, Hessen, Bavaria, Sachsen-Anhalt and Sachsen. The official boundary table lists these five states.
On the catalogue map, area 2 lies below area 3 and to the left of area 4. Area 1 extends much farther into the northwest. These relationships let you check the choice without memorising every boundary line.

The other three answers
The other numbers mark different federal states.
1
Number 1 identifies Niedersachsen, the larger area in the northwest. Thüringen lies farther southeast.
3
Number 3 identifies Sachsen-Anhalt north and northeast of Thüringen. It is a separate federal state.
4
Number 4 identifies Sachsen east of Thüringen. Despite their similar names, Sachsen and Sachsen-Anhalt are also different states.
The number belongs to the map, not the state.
Another illustration may give Thüringen a different number or colour. Remember its location and neighbours. Number 2 is only the correct selection for this particular question.
The original quiz graphic remains unchanged. The additional wooden shapes and study scenes are fictional AI images, not maps drawn to scale.
